A quick post to let you all in on some stuff I’ve really been enjoying lately. But before that, on this week’s Illustrious Gentlemen podcast I chatted with José Youngs, an MMA journalist and huge comic fan. We talked about his favorite books, how he got into comics, what he recommends and more before diving into some MMA talk on the back end. It was great, so give that a spin wherever you listen to podcasts or listen directly in-browser here.
These Prisoning Hills (Christopher Rowe) is a sci-fi novella that has some fun world building and interesting characters. Some stuff is just fun and random as hell and left unexplained, which I dug. A very quick read. Watch out for sky bears.
I’m not in love with Knives Out or Glass Onion. I thought they were fine but I don’t really get why people are losing their shit over it. That said, Poker Face I am absolutely loving. Old school, character development, great performance. Just very done stuff. It has the Lyonne factor really pushing it over the edge.
Drive (James Sallis). I saw the movie years ago, but my goal in January was to tear through some shorter, sci-fi and crime books, and this one was a joy. Start to finish I really dug it. A crime book with touches of Hollywood and character development. It gets my highest recommendation.
Even if you’re sick of dystopian stuff, post-apocalyptic stories, all that jazz, episode 3 of The Last of Us might be the best hour of television I’ve watched in a very, very long time. Do yourself a favor and give it a watch.
